NID needed for domestic travel, says CAAB

Passengers will have to present valid photo identity card while travelling in domestic routes by air, according to new instruction of Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (Caab).
Caab came up with the instruction on Tuesday to beef up overall security of the airports and airlines following an alleged attempt to hijack a Biman flight at Shah Amanat International Airport on Sunday.
The passengers will have to enclose valid passport, national ID, smart card, driving license, student ID or official ID of the respective office with their tickets mandatorily, said a press release.
Otherwise, the passengers will be denied of travailing opportunity by air if they fail to provide NID cards in airports.
Earlier, the Civil Aviation authority sent letters to all airlines instructing them to mandatorily check valid photo ID cards of the passengers before issuing boarding cards but the instruction did not follow mandatorily.
The Biman plane made an emergency landing and all the 148 passengers on board were evacuated safely after the highjacking attempt. All the cabin crew members were also safe.
Army para-commando units then neutralized the ‘deranged’ hijacker.

Prep “for all eventualities”: Imran Khan to Pak as India hits Jaish camp

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday asked the country’s armed forces and people to “remain prepared for all eventualities” after the Indian Air Force destroyed a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist camp across the Line of Control early Tuesday.
Imran Khan chaired an emergency meeting after India carried out the “non-military, pre-emptive air strikes” to target the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed, which was planning more attacks in the country after the one in Pulwama earlier this month.
“Forum concluded that India has committed uncalled for aggression to which Pakistan shall respond at the time and place of its choosing,” the Pakistan Prime Minister’s office said in a statement after the meeting of the National Security Committee that included the chiefs of all three armed forces and other officials.
“PM has directed that elements of national power including the Armed Forces and the people of Pakistan to remain prepared for all eventualities,” it added.
India struck the biggest camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammed and a “very large number” of terrorists were eliminated, said Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale.
Some 300 terrorists were killed in the Indian Air Force strike at around 3:30 am, top government sources told NDTV. Twelve Mirage 2000 fighter jets dropped 1,000 kg bombs on the camp at Balakot. India has started the process of briefing major world powers about Tuesday’s air strikes.
The Jaish-e-Mohammed was responsible for the February 14 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama, in which 40 soldiers were killed.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had earlier said: “This was grave aggression by India against Pakistan. This is a violation of LoC and Pakistan has the right to retaliate and self-defence”.
In his statement after the Pulwama terror attack, Imran Khan had said the country would act if India gave “actionable intelligence” against terrorists based in the country. He had warned India that Pakistan would retaliate if India indulged in any “misadventure”.
India said Mr Khan’s offer to investigate the attack if provided proof is a “lame excuse”.
“It is a well-known fact that Jaish-e-Mohammed and its leader Masood Azhar are based in Pakistan. These should be sufficient proof for Pakistan to take action,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

Indian air strike in Balakot killed 300 militants: Sources

The Indian Air Force airstrike in the town of Balakot killed about 300 militants, said government sources on Tuesday.
India has confirmed the attack on the biggest training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammad, the terror group which was involved in the February 14 attack on a CRPF convoy.
Twelve Mirage 2000 fighter jets struck joint training camps of Jaish and LeT inside Pakistan and completely destroyed them by shelling 1,000 kg bombs. It took 19 minutes to complete the operation.
Indian jets crossed into Pakistani territory on Tuesday, conducting what one minister said was an air strike on “terror camps”, dramatically escalating tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors who have fought three wars against each other.
The confrontation follows a growing rift between the arch-foes since a Feb. 14 suicide bombing in the disputed Kashmir region, claimed by a Pakistani-based militant group, killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police. New Delhi blamed Islamabad, which denies having a role in the attack.
Pakistan downplayed Tuesday’s incident, saying there were no casualties and that Indian jets “released a payload” hastily in a forest area after crossing Kashmir’s Line of Control (LoC), which acts as a de facto border between the two countries.
“Air Force carried out aerial strike early morning today at terror camps across the LoC (Line of Control) and Completely destroyed it,” India’s minister of state for agriculture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, said on Twitter.
Pakistan’s military confirmed Indian aircraft violated its airspace but said “no infrastructure got hit”.
“Indian aircrafts intruded from Muzafarabad sector,” Pakistani military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Twitter early on Tuesday, referring to an area in the Pakistan-administered part of Kashmir.
Ghafoor said “facing timely and effective response from Pakistan Air Force”, the Indian aircraft “released payload in haste while escaping which fell near Balakot. No casualties or damage”.
Ghafoor, saying that more information would be released, tweeted four pictures of the alleged site where Indian aircraft dropped a payload near Balakot, purportedly showing a bomb crater in a forest area but no serious damage.
Balakot, a town in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan, is about 50 km (30 miles) from the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir, which was the cause of two of the three wars India and Pakistan have fought since the end of British colonial rule in 1947.
Analysts have alleged Pakistani militants have their training camps in the area, although Pakistan has always denied the presence of any such camps.
RARE STRIKES
Indian markets fell on Tuesday amid concerns over increased tensions with Pakistan. The rupee fell to 71.16 to the dollar compared with Monday’s close of 70.9850.
The 10-year benchmark bond yield rose to 7.61 percent compared with 7.58 percent on Monday, while the broader NSE stock index declined 1.17 percent.
Shelling across the Kashmiri Line of Control has occurred frequently over the past few years but airspace violations by jets are extremely rare.
New Delhi said in 2016, following another large attack on Indian security forces in Kashmir, its troops crossed the LoC and carried out a “surgical strike” on suspected militant camps in Pakistan Kashmir. Islamabad denied anything serious occurred.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, facing a tight election in the next couple of months, has vowed a strong response to the Feb. 14 attack in the Pulwama district of Kashmir, the deadliest single assault on Indian forces in 30 years of insurgency in the Muslim-majority region.
The attack was claimed by Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), prompting India to accuse Pakistan of harboring the militant group. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan denied his country was involved and offered to help investigate the attack if any credible evidence was provided.
JeM had also previously caused a crisis between India and Pakistan over a raid on the Indian parliament in 2001.
Indian television channels quoted unidentified government sources as saying multiple targets were destroyed during the air raid into Pakistan involving a dozen Mirage aircraft.
CNN News18 said it was a major strike involving 1,000 lb bombs and that the number of militants killed could be as high as 200. It did not say from where it got its information. The defense ministry reiterated it had no information.
“It’s a fitting reply to the horror we witnessed in Pulwama,” said former Indian air chief Pradeep Vasant.
“It’s an airborne surgical strike, we have upped the ante,” he said.
Mohammed Iqbal, a resident of Mendhar in India’s side of Kashmir, said there had been jets flying all night.

PM, President pay tribute to Language Movement martyrs

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Abdul Hamid have paid rich tributes at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka to pay homage to the martyrs of the Language Movement.
The Prime Minister and the President placed wreaths on the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka to pay respects to the martyrs on the first hour of Thursday.
The President was the first to lay the wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar. Just after the President, the Prime Minister placed the wreath at the Shaheed Minar.
The duo led the nation in paying tribute to the great heroes who sacrificed their lives to establish rights of the mother tongue in 1952.
President Hamid in a message remembered the Language Movement martyrs and hoped that the day will become a tool to protect every language and culture.
Hasina in her message urged all to work for the development of the country in the spirit of Ekushey.
Then PM Hasina placed another wreath along with other leaders of the ruling Awami League after Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury paid respect to the heroes.
The Shaheed Minar was opened for all after the VIPs paid homage amidst tight security.
Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah, Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition in Parliament GM Quader, Dhaka South Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon were among the VIPs who paid their homage to the language martyrs.
The immortal line — “‘Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulite Pari’ (Can I forget the 21st of February, incarnadined by the love of my brother?) — was on everyone’s lips.
The Language Movement began in 1948 when the then Government of Pakistan declared Urdu to be the sole national language of Pakistan. The Bangladeshi (Then East Pakistan) people protested, since the majority of the population was from East Pakistan and their mother language was Bangla. They demanded Bangla to be at least one of the national languages, in addition to Urdu. The movement reached its peak in 1952 and culminated with the adoption of Bangla as one of the state languages of Pakistan.
The Language Movement then acted as a trigger for Bengalis to carve an independent nation out of Pakistan 29 years later.
Notably, in November 1999, the UNESCO had declared February 21 as the International Mother Language Day.
The day is a national holiday. The national flag will fly at half-mast in honour of the martyrs.

Chawkbazar fire: DMCH begins handing over bodies to families

Dhaka Medical College Hospital authorities have started handing over the bodies of the Chawkbazar fire victims around 2:15pm Thursday.
Confirming the matter, DMCH Forensics Medicine department head Prof Shohel Mahmood said, “We’ve handed over the bodies that we were able to identify,” he said.
He also said they would hand over around 30 to 35 bodies to the families throughout the day.
Chawkbazar Police OC Pradip Biswas said they were also involved in the handing over process with the hospital authorities so that bodies can be handed out to family members in an orderly manner.
To make the total process more convenient, the local administration has set up an information centre at the hospital to provide information on the victims.
Meanwhile, the families of the deceased victims will get Tk 20,000 each from district administration to lay the victims to rest, Senior Assistant Commissioner Imrul Hassan, told reporters.
The deadly fire broke out in a four-storey building called ‘Wahed Bhaban’ behind the Shahi Mosque at Churihatta around 10:30pm Wednesday and spread to four other buildings.
According to fire service officials, so far, 70 body bags were sent to the morgue at DMCH and at least 40 people have been admitted to the same hospital.
However, the hospital authorities said there were 67 bodies as some parts of different bodies were packed in separate bags.

Indian PM Modi breaks protocol to welcome Saudi crown prince MBS

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke with government protocol to personally welcome Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to New Delhi on Tuesday.
Ordinarily, the prime minister would not receive a foreign dignitary at the airport, but instead send an official or a junior government minister.
“A new chapter in bilateral relations,” Raveesh Kumar, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, posted on Twitter, hailing Modi “breaking protocol” with a photograph of the pair warmly clasping hands by the steps of the prince’s plane.
Modi is due to hold talks on Wednesday with the crown prince, who has already visited Pakistan, where he also received a lavish reception.
The trip has taken on extra dimension after a bombing in the disputed Kashmir region on Thursday that India blamed on Pakistan. The neighbors are each keen to cement ties with Saudi Arabia even as tensions between them have risen sharply.
Saudi Arabia is India’s top supplier of crude oil but the two countries have expanded ties beyond energy, and their governments have agreed to build a strategic partnership, India’s Foreign Ministry said last week.
During the trip, India is expecting the crown prince to announce an initial investment in its National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, a quasi-sovereign wealth fund, to help accelerate the building of ports and highways, an Indian official and Saudi state media has said.
He is also due to visit China, Malaysia and Indonesia during the tour that is his first through the region since the outcry over the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.
The crown prince’s trip began days after a suicide bomber killed 40 Indian paramilitary police in Kashmir in the attack claimed by the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant group.
New Delhi has accused Pakistan of having a hand in the bombing and vowed to punish Islamabad, which denies involvement.
During his visit to Pakistan, the crown prince said Saudi Arabia had signed investment agreements worth $20 billion.
He is scheduled to leave New Delhi on Wednesday night, India’s Foreign Ministry said.

Bale scores 100th Real goal in derby win

Gareth Bale scored his 100th Real Madrid goal as they beat Atletico in the Madrid derby to overtake their rivals into second place.
Casemiro put Real ahead with a volley but Antoine Griezmann equalised after scoring a one-on-one.
Sergio Ramos restored the visitors’ lead with a penalty and Bale converted from Luka Modric’s pass to ensure the win.
Atletico ended with 10 men after Thomas Partey was shown a second yellow.

Real revival continues

In-form Real Madrid have now won six of their past seven games, having drawn 1-1 with Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg on Wednesday and this deserved derby win moves them to within five points of La Liga leaders Barca.
Santiago Solari’s side opened the scoring when Casemiro was left unmarked and he sent an acrobatic volley flying past Jan Oblak as Atletico failed to clear a corner.
Atletico levelled as Griezmann chased onto an Angel Correa through-ball to slot under Thibaut Courtois, who had toy rats thrown at him by Atletico fans. The Belgian spent three seasons on loan at Atleti from Chelsea earlier in his career.
But Ramos scored his eighth penalty of the season to restore Real’s lead after Vinicius Jr had been fouled by Jose Maria Gimenez. Four of his previous seven had been ‘Panenkas’ – chipped down the middle – but this time he drove the ball into the bottom left-corner.
Vinicius was replaced by Bale in the second half and the Welshman smashed a low shot beyond Oblak for his landmark Real goal in his 217th game.

Atletico fail to turn up in poor performance

Atletico were lacklustre as they conceded two goals in the first half of a home game for the first time since moving to the Wanda Metropolitano in 2017 – and the fastest in La Liga at the venue.
Griezmann’s goal, their one good moment of the game, came after a long video assistant referee delay, but he had timed his run perfectly.
Atleti had thought they had levelled for a second time when Alvaro Morata, facing his former club, chipped Courtois brilliantly from outside the box – but the VAR team correctly ruled he was offside. Atletico had been unbeaten in 19 games before his loan arrival from Chelsea, but have lost both matches with him in the team.
A red card seemed inevitable for Diego Simeone’s side, who had six players booked and it eventually came when Partey fouled Toni Kroos for his second booking.

Dhaka, Kolkata civic bodies sign MoU

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to exchange the best practices of the two cities.
This agreement will enable the two civic bodies exchange technologies to providing better services to residents of Dhaka and Kolkata.
DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon, along with a delegation from Bangladesh, visited the KMC headquarters and held a meeting with Mayor Firhad Hakim.
Khokon told reporters he was particularly interested in Kolkata’s waste disposal system as he found the city much cleaner than earlier.
“I was really impressed to see how clean Kolkata has become. Going back to Dhaka, I will send a team, who will interact with their Kolkata counterparts on this,” he said.
“Collaboration of Dhaka and Kolkata is essential for having a sustained relationship of friendship. More such visits will follow from both the sides,” the DSCC Mayor said.
The Kolkata Mayor said the KMC would also send its officials to Dhaka to learn about the modernization plan for Dhaka. “We have signed an MoU. We are keen on exchanging our technical expertise with the Dhaka civic officials,” Hakim said.
According to sources in KMC, the areas that have been identified for collaboration include solid waste management, healthcare, education, traffic management etc.

The decision came after a meeting of the AL nomination boards presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday.
On Friday, the ruling party announced 41 candidates for seats reserved for women in parliament.
The latest nominations take the Awami League’s tally of women candidates to 43. The party has now filled its allotment of women’s seats in parliament.
Among the 350 seats in parliament, 50 are reserved exclusively for women.

IS resists ‘final push’ in eastern Syria

US-backed fighters in Syria say they are meeting fierce resistance as they attack the last enclave held by Islamic State (IS) militants in the country.
A spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) told the AP news agency “the most experienced” jihadists are defending their last stronghold.
Two years ago IS controlled large areas of Syria and Iraq.
But they are now confined to a tiny pocket in Syria’s eastern province of Deir al-Zour, near the Iraqi border.
On Saturday, after a pause of more than a week to allow some 20,000 civilians to leave the area, SDF spokesman Mustafa Bali said the group was launching the “final battle to crush IS” in the border village of Baghuz.
Overnight he told the Associated Press (AP): “The battle is very fierce. Those remaining inside are the most experienced who are defending their last stronghold. According to this you can imagine the ferocity and size of the fighting.”
The SDF, backed by air strikes carried out of the US-led coalition, has driven out IS from towns and villages in north-eastern Syria in recent months.
At its peak in 2014, IS established a “caliphate” stretching across Syria and Iraq that was similar in size to the UK and ruled over more than 7.7 million people.
In December, US President Donald Trump said IS militants were “mostly gone” and announced the US would withdraw all of its 2,000 troops from Syria.
On Wednesday he said: “It should be announced, probably some time next week, that we will have 100% of the caliphate.”

How many militants are left?

IS has suffered substantial losses, but the UN says it still reportedly controls between 14,000 and 18,000 militants in Iraq and Syria, including up to 3,000 foreigners.
Meanwhile, there are significant numbers of IS-affiliated militants in Afghanistan, Egypt, Libya, South-East Asia and West Africa, and to a lesser extent in Somalia, Yemen, Sinai and the Sahel.
Individuals inspired by the group’s ideology also continue to carry out attacks elsewhere.
