'Afghanistan is the first in corruption in South Asia, Bangladesh second'


Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) executive chief Iftekharuzzaman said, "Bangladesh's position in corruption in South Asia is the second lowest. Earlier, there are only Afghanistan. The rest of the countries are ahead of us against corruption. '

On Sunday, a human chain was held at Dhaka University (DU) TSC on the occasion of 'International Corruption Day'. Iftekharuzzaman told these words in the human chain.

Iftekharuzzaman questioned the role of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against high-level corrupt people of the country. He said, "We are still failing to control corruption. There is no instance of taking any action of the ACC against those who are looted, high-level corrupt. They have to take action against them officially.

At this time, TIB's executive chief urged the government to repeal the Digital Security Act.

Besides, the speakers of the human chain said 63 percent of the world's people are standing against corruption. 93 percent of the people in Bangladesh gave their opinion against corruption.

Meanwhile, TIB has recommended 10 points for preventing corruption in today's human chain.

Recommendations: There should be a definite commitment to fulfill the existing deficit of democracy and good governance by the political parties in the next parliamentary elections and the specific outline of implementation; To reduce the impact of black money in the elections; To cancel the controversial sections of the Public Service Act, 2018, to prevent irregularities and corruption in public sector; Ensuring exemplary punishment for corruption and fraud in the state-owned banking sector and the persons involved in unprecedented financial scandals of the private banks under trial; To adopt a coordinated and supplementary strategy to increase professional excellence and effectiveness in the judicial system, administration and law enforcement agencies; Determination of the eligibility criteria for appointing heads and members of statutory organizations and ensuring transparent process recruitment; Including business, political parties and media in the Right to Information Act; Enhancing capacity in both applicants and information applicants for implementation and expansion of the law; Finally, to ensure effective enforcement of political will to strengthen the ACC in preventing corruption.
