AL looks to utilise digital platforms

The Awami League has adopted different strategies to conduct its election campaign for the upcoming general elections, slated for December 30, to reach each voter till the last day of campaigning.
As part of its strategy, the AL-nominated candidates will send SMS to their voters soon, requesting them to cast their votes in favour of party symbol Nouka (Boat) on voting day, party insiders said.
The party candidates have already started using the social media including Facebook and twitter for campaigning. Some candidates have made documentaries on the government’s development projects and shared them on their own Facebook and other social media pages.
Talking to The Independent, AL publicity sub-committee convener Dr. Hasan Mahmud yesterday said, “First of all, each party candidate will be provided with four CDs. The first CD contains a documentary on the government and the second one five patriotic songs. The third one is on development activities, and the last one on acts of violence committed by the BNP-Jamaat activists.”
Earlier, in 2014 the BNP-Jamaat leaders and workers had carried on a three-month-long violent movement to protest against the much talked about January 5 general elections where 153 lawmakers from AL were elected uncontested, as the major opposition BNP had boycotted the polls.
However, Hasan Mahmud, also an AL central leader, said the party-nominated candidates may use mobile operators to conduct their election campaign. With the help of these mobile operators, the party candidates may send SMS to each voter requesting them to vote for Nouka in the December 30 polls.
The party also plans to use print, online and electronic media to reach the voters. It will also organise cultural and social programmes targeting young voters, Hasan said.
The AL leader also mentioned that they had already prepared some television advertisements related to the party’s election campaign, to be aired on different TV channels soon.
Ten types of posters had also been designed for the party candidates, he added.
Meanwhile, the AL president Sheikh Hasina will formally launch her party’s campaign from Tungipara form today (Wednesday) by paying tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at his graveyard.
Speaking on the issue, AL joint general secretary Abdur Rahman yesterday said the AL president and Prime Minister will go to Tungipara in Gopalganj on Wednesday morning by road. She will launch the formal campaign after paying tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She will then take part in different political programmes there, he added.
However, the AL president will return to Dhaka from Tungipara tomorrow (Thursday). During her return to Dhaka the premier will conduct the election campaign in seven places including Faridpur Bhanga intersection, Faridpur intersection, Paturia Ghat, Manikganj bus stand, Dhamrai Rabeya Medical College and Hospital premises and Savar bus stand.
The AL chief Sheikh Hasina will also visit different districts as part of her party’s campaigning, and address rallies across the country to drum up support in favour of the AL, party insiders said. They also said the party chief will continue to visit places across the country till December 28, the last date of campaigning for the coming 11th parliamentary elections, seeking votes for the ‘Nouka’ (the ‘boat’), which is the party’s electoral symbol.
The AL president began campaigning informally from Sylhet, the city of shrines, on January 30. As per the party’s election campaign, the Premier has already visited Barisal, Chandpur, Chottogram, Khulna, Jessore and Thakurgaon and addressed public rallies there.
Party-nominated candidates, as well as leaders and workers of the Awami League, fanned out across the country after getting the party symbol, the ‘Nouka’ (the ‘boat’) from the Election Commission on Monday and are campaigning for the elections.
