The United Nations (UN) has called upon all stakeholders in Bangladesh to ensure an environment free of violence, intimidation and coercion before, during and after the elections, so as to enable a peaceful, credible and inclusive poll.
On Thursday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres came up with the call in a written statement on the upcoming 11th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.
“All Bangladeshi citizens, including minorities and women, must feel safe and confident in exercising their right to vote. Civil society and electoral observers should be fully supported to play their role in the process,” said Antonio Guterres.
The Secretary-General reiterated the continued commitment of the United Nations to support a peaceful and democratic Bangladesh.
In a tweet message posted on Thursday, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General said, “Ahead of the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, the UN General Secretary calls for an environment free of violence, intimidation and coercion.”
