AL celebrates victory to hide its moral defeat in polls: BNP

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said that Awali League is celebrating its victory to hide its moral defeat in the December 30 election.
“They’re celebrating the victory to hide the moral defeat they suffered in the election as well as to divert people’s attention to a different direction from it,” the BNP leader told reporters after placing a wreath at the party founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave, marking his 83rd birth anniversary.
Mentioning that the ruling party got isolated from people through their moral defeat on December 30 Fakhrul alleged that AL has little respect for democracy.
“Awami League had established one-party rule ‘Baksal’ in 1975 banning all the political parties and snatching people’s freedom of expression as the party does not believe in democracy,” he said.
Recalling the ‘contributions’ of their party founder Ziaur Rahman, Fakhrul said, “He restored multi-party democracy and people’s freedom of expression in the country.”
The BNP secretary general also said the party has pledged on the birthday of Ziaur Rahman to restore democracy in the country once again.
“We’ve vowed to free our chairperson Kahleda Zia from jail and bring back home our acting chairman Tarique Rahman and reestablish democracy in the country,” said the BNP leader.
Awami League is holding a grand rally at the capital’s Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday to celebrate its landslide victory in the 11th parliamentary election on December 30 last year.
