At least 20 people were hurt as garment workers clashed with police in Savar, on the third consecutive day of their protest for an increase in the minimum wage and a set of other demands.
The clash ensued when law enforcers fired several teargas shells and charged batons on the workers who tried to take position on a road in Hemayetpur area at 8:30am.
In Uttarkhan and Dakhinkhan areas, workers began to gather after 9am and headed toward the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, said Airport Zone Assistant Police Commissioner Md Mizanur Rahman.
Police used tear shells to disperse the workers when they attempted to occupy the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Uttara’s Abdullahpur around 11:45am.
The demonstration in front of a 22-storey garment factory had blocked off one side of the road in Mirpur’s Kalshi.
Garments workers are also protesting on the streets in Rokeya Sharani and the Pallabi area of Dhaka city.
RMG workers have been protesting since Sunday to demand the government implement the new wage structure it has declared for the sector, including the minimum wage.
