‘Drug dealer’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

An alleged drug dealer, who was arrested by the law enforcers on Sunday, was killed in a reported gunfight near Damdamia area of Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Shamsul Alam, 35.
Police arrested him on Sunday afternoon, said Teknaf Police Station Officer-in-Charge Pradeep Kumar Das.
A police team took him on a raid to the Damdamia BGB Checkpost area to recover contraband yaba pills based on information he provided, said the OC.
As the team reached there, Shamsu’s accomplices opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate in self-defence, triggering the gunfight, the official told reporters.
At one stage, the criminals retreated and police found Shamsu’s bullet-hit body on the ground.
He was taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the duty doctors declared him dead.
Two firearms, 12 rounds of ammunition and 20,000 yaba tablets were recovered from the spot, said the police official.
Three policemen were also received bullet injuries during the gunfight, the OC added.
