Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that the yaba traders of the south-eastern region of the country are ready to surrender to authorities in Cox’s Bazar at the end of January.
The Minister made the statement while talking to reporters on Friday.
“I told police to prepare details of the yaba traders’ identities. We will go over there on the 30th of January or the first week of February,” said the Home Ministers.
The Minister’s comment comes in the wake of reports that drug traders are gathering in the district amid an ongoing anti-drug raid.
So far, at least 51 drug traders have been reported to be killed in ‘shootouts’ either with the law enforcing agencies or due to internal conflicts in Cox’s Bazar since the start of the anti-narcotics crackdown.
Besides, on January 10, former Teknaf MP Abdur Rahman Bodi had given a five-day ultimatum to listed yaba traders to surrender or face consequences.
Bodi also said that a number of yaba smugglers had contacted him recently and agreed to surrender to the authorities, adding that he had held discussions with law-enforcement and other authorities regarding the surrender.
