Syed Ashraful Islam passes away


After battling cancer for a long time, veteran Awami League leader and son of Bangladesh first Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam, Syed Ashraful Islam has passed away on Thursday night.
He breathed his last at a hospital in Bangkok, where he was under treatment for the past couple of months.
Syed Ashraf was 68 years old and was admitted in the Bamrungrund Hospital in Bangkok after being diagnosed with cancer.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed grief at the death of her dear friend and colleague, both of whom had fathers who were instrumental to the independence of Bangladesh.
President Md Abdul Hamid also mourned Syed Ashraf.
In the last cabinet, he was in charge of the Public Administration Ministry and was the general secretary of the Awami League before Obaidul Quader.
He was elected as an MP in Sunday’s election as well and he was absent in the oath taking ceremony on Thursday.
Syed Ashraf, son of Syed Nazrul Islam, one of the four national leaders killed in the jail in 1975, left for the United Kingdom after the assassination.
He became a member of parliament on the AL ticket from Kishoreganj-1in 1996 after returning home. He was re-elected in 2001, 2008 and 2014.
