Garments workers have rioted on a road in Hatirjheel area of Dhaka following death of their two co-workers in a road accident in Malibagh area on Tuesday afternoon.
The protesting workers vandalized 40 vehicles and burned down two vehicles.
Meem, 13, and Nahid Parvin Poly, 19 died as a bus of ‘Suprabhat Paribahan’ hit them in Malibagh rail crossing area around 1:30pm.
Inspector Md Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost confirmed the deaths in the accident.
As the news of the death spread, several hundred workers of garment factory ‘MH’ took to the street and vandalised 40 vehicles and burned down two vehicles.
Two firefighting units rushed to the spot to douse the flame in the torched vehicles, said Rana Mia, an official of the fire service and civil defence headquarters.
Demonstrations continued till 6:15pm when the report was filed.
Police arrested the driver and seized the bus, Shiblee Noman, additional deputy commissioner (Motijheel zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said.
Additional industrial police personnel have been deployed in the area.
