Liberation War’s spirit destroyed through Dec 30 polls: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the country’s democracy was killed through the 11th parliamentary election held on December 30.
“The BNP was not defeated in this election. It is the Awami League which was defeated. Our spirit of the Liberation War was crushed,” said the BNP leader while speaking at a discussion program at Mirza Ruhul Amin auditorium in Dhaka.
Fakhrul also urged general people to raise their voices to save democracy and the country.
“The ruling party is violating the constitution and destroying the democratic future of Bangladesh,” he told the audience.
Mentioning their party’s previous call for holding the national election under a non-partisan party, the BNP leader said “We said a fair election is impossible under Awami League and it has been proven through the polls. Our decision to boycott the 2014 polls was correct.”
He also termed the Election Commission a ‘paper tiger’.
Fakhrul claimed that a total of 2.6 million opposition men were accused in 98,000 false and baseless cases filed across the country.
He urged the government to scrap results of the December 30 election and arrange fresh polls.
