First session of 11th parliament begins Jan 30


The first session of the newly formed eleventh parliament will begin on January 30.
All preparations have been taken for the first session, the sources said, adding security measures have been tightened and JS Bhaban beautified with flowers as well as vegetables tubs.
The session will begin at 3:00pm on the day.
The parliament secretariat confirmed the matter by issuing a release on January 9.
The release read that President Abdul Hamid summoned the session today exercising the power bestowed upon him as per clause (1) of article 72 of the constitution.
President Hamid will deliver his speech on the first day of the session as this will be the first session of 2019, it added.
According to the parliament’s rules of procedure, the duration and proceedings of the first session will be finalized at a meeting of the business advisory committee of the parliament with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair on the same day.
Notably, Awami League stayed on power for the third consecutive term securing 257 seats of the 298 seats where voting for the general election was held on December 30, 2018.
The Grand Alliance, the coalition headed by the ruling party, secured an absolute majority with 288 seats won by its candidates.
Overall, this is the fourth time that the Awami League has formed the government.
On January 3, a total of 289 elected parliament members took oath. As per the procedure, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury first took oath and signed in the oath book.
Later, she conducted the oath ceremony where 289 lawmakers including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took oath.
